The Ideal Packaging

When I was a kid and there’s a storm, I always expect for the amazing formation of a rainbow caused by the refraction and reflection of light waves as it passed through the droplets of water. Thus, in one of the story books that I’ve read, I wanted to go at the end of it believing that there’s really a pot of gold. But now all I can see are flooded streets and highways, and lots of relief goods.

Monsoon, Relief Goods, Ondoy, Milenyo, Pilipinas, Philippines, Sakuna, August 2012 Tragedy, August 2012, Relief Good, Relief, Recycling, Paper, Plastic, Environment, Metro Manila, Marikina, The Ideal Packaging of Relief Goods, The Ideal Packaging, Philippine Politics, TRAPO, Traditional Politician, Pollution, Waste

Environment friendly relief goods that were arranged inside a big box.

From the word itself (relief) which means that it should only be used during emergency. However, we seem to abuse the word, as relief goods are now becoming fad and trending (as twitter connotes) among Filipinos. It’s like majority of us enjoy the moments of preparing it (especially the greedy TRAditional POliticiansTRAPO, where they can campaign at the same time) or receiving these kind of things as if there is almost always someone in need especially those who are living in the flooded area including the informal settlers.

According to an investigative documentary that I’ve watched, the reason of great flooding is due to the use of plastic materials. Hence some are saying it is due to the blocked passages of water ways because of the reconstruction of roads and housings, and consequently there is no alternative for the water to flow but on the streets and highways. But debating whichever causes it doesn’t make sense since both of it already added to its effect; what important now is finding a solution on how to prevent it moving forward.

THE MONSOON

Not even a typhoon but it was just a monsoon that has flooded most part of the congested city of Metro Manila last August. That month made everyone forgets the memories left by typhoon Ondoy which happened several years ago; the only difference is that many of us are now prepared for a tragedy like this.

THE FILIPINO SPIRIT

“Baha ka lang Pilipino ako!” This quotation uplifted us as a nation. We did see bayanihan during the monsoon; not just the typical bayanihan but the true bayanihan spirit that let us surpassed everything victoriously. As much as I would want to describe every detail of what I’ve witnessed during the tragedy, it would just take me long hours of reminiscing history that for some already considered it as their past repulsion.

The flooding has subsided but its effect has marked the minds of the victims. Yes, it did moreover to children.

Monsoon, Relief Goods, Ondoy, Milenyo, Pilipinas, Philippines, Sakuna, August 2012 Tragedy, August 2012, Relief Good, Relief, Recycling, Paper, Plastic, Environment, Metro Manila, Marikina, The Ideal Packaging of Relief Goods, The Ideal Packaging, Philippine Politics, TRAPO, Traditional Politician, Pollution, Waste

Instead of political ads from the person where it came from, we can put a simple reminder for the victim to become responsible on their values and manners in taking care of our environment.

To assist the victims in putting back the pieces of their lives literally, they were given relief goods: relief goods that would signify for their new hope. But do these things really help them? Perhaps somehow, as the food can fill their tummy and the clothes can comfort them for a while, after that, what happens next? They remain undisciplined by throwing their empty plastic bags and trashes somewhere: in the streets, creeks, and rivers. Anywhere they want as long as they can afford to.

Then when nature strikes back again, they will cry for the consequence and afterwards, expect for another relief good. Seems like a never-ending story between the victims and the volunteers.

THE NEED FOR CHANGE

We already felt the impact of such changes by using paper-like materials in malls and groceries. But will this change for the better? Or will the flooding really stop? Maybe! As many of us think that if we use paper-like materials, it is now safe to throw it anywhere. But then again, it’s another misconception. Some are saying that we opt to use recycled paper as compared to plastic to lessen the pollution. How come!? I don’t think so! According to study it’s much cheaper to recycle plastic against paper since it uses less energy (which means less pollution). Maybe in this debate, they are pertaining to the decomposition of the material: paper decomposes faster than plastic. However, if papers are placed in a very dry climate, it could survive for many hundred years (to state a scenario, people may find old newspapers in the walls of their houses).

Monsoon, Relief Goods, Ondoy, Milenyo, Pilipinas, Philippines, Sakuna, August 2012 Tragedy, August 2012, Relief Good, Relief, Recycling, Paper, Plastic, Environment, Metro Manila, Marikina, The Ideal Packaging of Relief Goods, The Ideal Packaging, Philippine Politics, TRAPO, Traditional Politician, Pollution, Waste

Prevention is better than expectation. We can be prepared for the coming of the tragedy but we can also prevent it from happening.

If I were to choose between paper and plastic, I’d still choose paper. Why? I don’t know, maybe because it’s closer to our nature. In return, I will just ensure the efficient use of every sheet of it. Maybe another reason is that, it doesn’t suffocates or choke any animals when accidentally eaten unlike plastic.

Hence, I suggest that relief goods should be packed accordingly. Since this package contains necessary things, it should be repacked in a paper bag and not plastic. And instead of political ads from the person where it came from, we can put a simple reminder for the victim to become responsible on their values and manners in taking care of our environment. If we really want to give them hope, then this is the best time.

Prevention is better than expectation. Neither the use of paper or plastic could stop the flooding, as long as the people aren’t well-disciplined when it comes to throwing their waste and following the proper recycling.

One may say that the effect in using non-recyclable materials is only minor to us (for now) but if we as human beings don’t do anything to protect our environment, the response of our mother nature could be worse than we ever thought.

It’s better to give than to receive, but it is best to give something that is environment friendly. It doesn’t just aid the person in need but it also encourages them to become an earth warrior. (AAP)

Preserving Mankind with Kojie.san Men

Kojie-San Men

Do you think vanity is just for women and ladies!? In this modern era, I don’t think so. Even your favorite pet Shih Tzu or Persian cat need grooming not just for vanity but for hygienic purposes as well. Hence hygiene is a sign of a healthy lifestyle to preserve whatever God has given to us creatures.

As for men, it is only natural for them to become more conscious about themselves. Not just only today but I think even before, since I can still remember what my dad used to tell in his story that during his bachelor days, he always put pamada (hair gel) on his hair to look neat and attractive to ladies (I think that was one of his secrets why my mom has chosen him to be his lifetime leading man). Maybe during his days, I can also say that men were not that so much concern on everything as he focused only on his hair, how about his other aspects such as scents or the complexion? Well, that matters now!

Men who consider the importance of vanity are referred to as ‘metro sexual’. They are those individuals who are meticulous with what they wear and how they look outside. The more they take care of themselves, the more macho they become in the eyes of the ladies because they would look presentable and handsome to them. Moreover, if they possess the qualities of a typical Filipino bachelor (magalang, maginoo and masipag) like serenading at night using an acoustic guitar and rendering a romantic love song, then I would say it’s not just a plus factor but really an Avalanche of pogi points.

But men need to remind themselves that most of the ladies are not always looking at the outside appearance of the men because they are more emotionally attracted to someone who is nice, faithful and polite.

Sometimes it doesn’t matter how best you represent yourself outside to other people but its how you preserved the good qualities of a person. (AAP)

How the Legacy Continues: Long Live The Bourne

After his astonishing role as Hawkeye (a hero turned into a villain then back to being hero again)  in the film The Avengers, Jeremy Renner has proven once again that his star will continue to shine brightly in his newest movie, The Bourne Legacy.

Renner played another challenging role as Aaron Cross, a secret-agent member of Operation Outcome (Department of Defense black ops program) who boosts their physical and mental capabilities through the pills they called “chems”. At the beginning, he was seen having a training assignment in the freezing water of Alaska.

Afterward, because of the actions of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) as seen in The Bourne Ultimatum, the other projects such as Operation Blackbriar and the Treadstone have been publicly exposed and since the lead researchers for the Treadstone and Outcome projects appear together at professional functions in public, this has been video documented and has spread all over the internet. This could possibly a potential damaging video revealing the Outcome’s top secret furthermore to prevent exposing the scientific advances of the project, Eric Byer (Edward Norton), a retired Air Force colonel has decided to shut the program to the ground given that the FBI and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence have already started investigating the incident.

There was never just one…

Rachel and Jeremy in front of the Philippine Jeepney during their shooting of the film The Bourne Legacy.

As part of the plan, Byer tried to eliminate the other Outcome agents through the poisoned yellow chems, including the Outcome’s elite private research lab by chemically brainwashing Dr. Donald Foite (Željko Ivanek) and killing his colleagues inside the lab. Luckily, Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), the geneticist has survived the massacre in the lab but later she was attacked by a “D-Track” team of undercover CIA assassins in her house. This time, Cross has rescued her but in exchange convinced her to help him with his medical condition due to the effect of the pills. They went to Manila, Philippines where the chem. labs are located in order to help Cross viral off of the blue pills.

Cruz, There was never just one, Aaron Cross, Dr. Marta Shearing, Eric Byer, Legacy, Tony Gilroy, Robert Ludlum

The nerve cracking car-motorcycle chase scene. As a trivia, Renner admitted to one of his interviews that this was the hardest scene they have shot because he was thinking of Rachel’s welfare.

The highlight of the film was the breath-taking car-motorcycle chase held in Manila. I’m still amazed how they made it, knowing that the city during those hours always experience heavy traffic. Thanks to the high end camera and equipments which turned the chase into a thrilling experience for the viewer to actually feel the climax of the movie through the crashing Jeepneys (common Philippine transportation) and buses. But control yourself from loving these kinds of scenes as it would definitely raze your momentum teasing you for a sequel or so.

When you watch the film The Bourne Legacy, you will wonder why they used Bourne in the title even if Jason didn’t personally appear in the film; my simple answer for that would probably due to the word ‘legacy’.

Merriam-Webster tells us that the word legacy means ‘inheritance’ and as a moviegoer, I find it fair that the said film must carry the said title because from what I understood, it was only in Bourne’s story (about a secret agent working for the Department of Defense) that the whole thing was introduced, accepted and enjoyed by the viewer hence there were still lots of others (secret agents/assets) who worked like him in other projects – different perspective from different character under the same story. I think it was strategically the perfect time for the production to finally introduce another secret agent in Cross’ character since Matt has refused to accept the original role.

Tony Gilroy, the co-screenwriter of the Bourne trilogy, directed this fourth Bourne film and I admire him for his directing skill. The story is based on Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne series but the plot is totally different from the novel.

Jason Bourne, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy, The Bourne Trilogy, Edward Norton, Željko Ivanek, Rachel Weisz, Jeremy Renner, Manila Philippines, Manila, Pasay, Navotas, Palawan, Binondo, Sta. Cruz, There was never just one, Aaron Cross, Dr. Marta Shearing, Eric Byer, Legacy, Tony Gilroy, Robert Ludlum

Rachel and Jeremy at the Taft Avenue Station of the MRT in Manila, Philippines

The actors who played the role never failed to give their awe-inspiring portrayal of the characters until the movie ends. Moreover, Rachel and Jeremy have established their own definition of love chemistry but regretfully no one has witnessed that, not even a single kiss was seen from these two.

Don’t get me wrong but I know many of the Bourne trilogy fans would say that the newly installed film does not deserve to be called a Bourne film. Really? But why? I don’t think you can compare Aaron Cross and Jason Bourne because these are two unique dispositions: one who is brave, dynamic and audacious (Cross), and the other one who is quiet and reserved but epic (Bourne). It’s like comparing an apple to an orange! Conversely if you are pertaining to the screenplay, then that’s another thing. (AAP)

It was the first time for them to look back at who they were when they left their alma mater, Technological University of the Philippines – Manila. There were lots of unexplainable happy moments when the group were talking with each other, it maybe because they missed the company very much. Discussions were from their current personal lives down to sudden reflections and reminiscing of memorable moments during their stay in the student publication – very candid yet very momentous.

The weather during that time was quite not good but it didn’t become a reason for them not to pursue the reunion.

Currently, all of them are already professionals in their own way; there is some who ventures into information technology while others into engineering, architecture, teaching and laboratory practitioner.

DLSAE holds Victory Party

The Dulaang La Salle Araneta Ensemble (DLSAE), the official University theatre group of De La Salle Araneta University held their victory party for the success of last school year’s musical production ‘A is E for Laila’, June 2012.

DLSAE activity in Cavana

Ms. Jennifer Duñgo, Head of Student Activities and Development, Office of the Student Affairs (OSA) of the university, organized the said event. The casts attended the half day event which began through a touch based conversation from the group’s current Artistic/Creative Director, Engr. Aleksandre A. Pates. Some of the casts left the group because they already graduated from the academe while some of them have transferred school due to residential relocation.

After the touch based activity, the group was able to watch the video of the musical play and they have shared priceless and memorable laughter while having refreshments. It was really a feast/fun-filled event for all the casts and they all received a personalized souvenir tumbler which displays pictures of the rehearsal and the actual show.

Mr. Christopher Polanco, University Chancellor, also dropped by to visit the casts while they were watching the play. Since most of the casts are still available, there is a plan to restage it sometime on school year 2012-2013 but the group is still eyeing to stage another original musical play for the upcoming season, about the life-works of founder of the university, Don Salvador Araneta. However, Engr. Pates is still in the process of completing the script for the production.

Simple Ways To Take Care of The Eyes

Eyes, Caring eyes, Tips to take care of the eyes, Eye Care, Pair of eyes, Eye pre-cautionary measures, Eye caution

Simple Ways To Take Care of the Eyes

Prevention is always better than cure so here are few tips on how to take care of our eyes:

  1. Sleep 6-8 hours daily.
  2. Avoid wearing contact lenses for more than 12 hours.
  3. Wear UV protective shades or sunglasses.
  4. Take a power nap during lunch time or breaks, or even in siesta. Your boss won’t kick you out of the office for a 5 or 10-minute sleep. Thus, it will make you even more productive after that.
  5. Limit the use of computer or lower the brightness so as not to strain your eyes.
  6. Avoid reading when travelling especially when in motion, this activity strains your eyes.
  7. At the office, relax your eyes by closing it for about a minute or two in the middle of the busy work.
  8. Avoid wearing 3D-glasses for too long.
  9. This one is a classic tip: gently put a cold cucumber slices against the eyes for ten 10 minutes before going to sleep.
  10. And most important of all, eat fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in Vitamin A and Beta Carotene. What you eat is what you are! So it absolutely defines what kind of person you are through your eating habits! Be healthy at all times. (AAP)

The Wonders of Epi-Lasik

The Wonders of Epi-Lasik

It’s true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder… But if one cannot see the picture clearly, the so-called beauty is just wasted because he or she cannot appreciate that. There is lot of reasons why human suffers from poor eyesight: it maybe hereditary or sometimes due to lack of Vitamin A, but most of the time, it is because of one’s abuse to health.

I was once a victim of poor eyesight. I remember the time I wore my first eyeglasses when I was only a 3rd year highschool student. I started having a grade of 50 for both eyes and as years went by, my vision got worse which ended up having grades of 500 and 575 for my left and right eyes, respectively (a significant 100% increase within 10 years period from 1999-2009). During these times, I am really dependent on my eyeglasses. I can’t even go somewhere else without it. It’s like, it’s already part of my face and it annoys me everytime I wipe my perspiration, because I still need to remove it first. It also hindered me to participate in outdoor sports and activities which makes me kinda’ indoor type of person.

Fortunately, with the wonders of technology, all these concerns have vanished when I got my clear vision back in 2010. Thus, I’m really thankful because it is now 20/16 (much even better as compare to the normal 20/20). This miracle is all because of the Epi-Lasik technology.

Epi-Lasik is a modern operational treatment for the eyes to cure or should I say ‘correct’ its refractive error condition whether it’s nearsighted (Myopia), farsighted (Hyperopia) or even Astigmatism (I think its capability is not only limited to resolve these three). These conditions are due to the deformation of the eye lenses (cornea) and it varies per type: for nearsightedness, the cornea has too much curvature or we can say that the eyeball is too long; for farsightedness, the cornea has not enough curvature or the eyeball is too short; and for astigmatism, there is a deviation in the shape of cornea (a shape other than spherical).

The Epi-Lasik operation adjusts the lens of the eyes by reshaping the surface of the cornea. However, not everyone can undergo the said operation (even if you can afford it) because it varies per condition, thus one must undergo and pass the eye testing/screening first prior to the actual operation. This procedure is performed to determine whether the patient’s eyes can handle such operation. I can still remember that, part of the major screening is to measure the thickness of the cornea, since the operation involves cutting a thin flap prior to the actual laser operation.

Once the patient has passed the screening, he or she will be scheduled for the actual operation. For patients wearing contact lenses, he or she needs to remove that and instead wear eyeglasses for one or two weeks (I’m not exactly sure on the number of days) before the operation.

In my case, after setting the date, the clinic has provided me a kit that includes eye drops, a pair of goggles, and documents containing the patient’s instructions before, during and after the operation. The perfect day to conduct the said operation is Friday because as per doctor’s advice, there will be three to four days downtime after the operation so if you are a full time employee, it’s better to set it on that day.

Before the actual operation, the patients will be asked to wear the appropriate suit like patient gown, cap and slippers. After that, the nurse and the doctor will orient the patients including their respective companion about the next thing that will happen.

Upon entering the operating room, the doctor will ask you to lie down on the bed just beneath the laser machine, and after that you just need to trust the doctor and follow whatever instruction he or she will give whether to widely open your eyes or to stare at something (he told me to stare at the blinking red light).

It is advisable to remain calm during the operation since you really can’t feel the surgery due to anesthesia. Based on experience, when the thin flap is removed, my eyes became so sensitive with light as if I just wanted to always close it and take a sleep.

The scheduled day of operation can accommodate two to four persons but only one at a time and unlike any other medical surgery, the Epi-Lasik procedure won’t lasts for a long time not even an hour. For me, it lasted only for about 18-19minutes. Watch the complete video footage of my actual Epi-Lasik operation below.

Epi-Lasik actual operation (video)

After the laser treatment, a temporary contact lens will be placed to cover the cornea for four days. It will serve as a bandage and during this time, it will help the healing process of the cornea to form a new thin flap. It is recommended that patient should rest the eyes to speed up the healing process, and he or she will be asked to wear swimming goggles during bath time as it will prevent the infection.

If you think the procedure is already finished, you are wrong because there will be series of post-operative instructions that needs to be followed like doctor’s follow-up consultation and medication.

It’s been two years since I’ve undergone the Epi-Lasik operation. Last month (April) marked my 2nd year and I really find it amazing — living my life eyeglasses free. Every day, my vision gets better and better, and I can proudly say that I’m a living proof of the Epi-Lasik technology, totally a godsend creation.

The operation cost is quite expensive but all I can say is “ITS WORTH IS MORE THAN AN INVESTMENT…” I wouldn’t deprive myself of the beautiful things around us. If I won’t take care of my eyes, then the refractive error condition might occur again in the future, the doctor said.

Furthermore, the doctor advised me that we should never ever rub our eyes too strong, or better yet never rub it at all because the shape of the lens can be damaged and the refractive error condition might take place.

For we know that the eyes can help us see not the future but the present that serves as the foundation of the future. (AAP)

Disclaimer: This article is based on experience. The actual operation may vary from person to person depending on the patient’s condition. It is recommended to consult your eye specialist for the best advice.

Battleship: The Battle for the Unknown

When we say sci-fi, we are thinking of an event that could possibly happen to Earth in the far future (I don’t say near future since I consider that ‘near’ today). Aside from high-end technologies, every notion to aliens, invaders and UFO always coincide with future: whether it impacts humans in a good or bad way; unlike the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull where the aliens were part of history. Thus the question will always be, “are we ready if that happens?”

Grammy, Rihanna, Battleship Review, Battleship 2012, Taylor Kitsch (known for the movie John Carter) as Lieutenant Alex Hopper, Brooklyn Decker as the leading lady Samantha Shane, Liam Neeson (The A-Team, Taken and Wrath of the Titans) as Admiral Shane, Alexander Skarsgård as Commander Stone Hopper and Rihanna as the Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes
Battleship

This is what the film Battleship tells us. In fact, it’s not new anymore because we have already seen this kind of plot in the past blockbuster movies like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, etc. One factor that I somehow don’t like about this movie is that, it is so predictable (like any other sci-fi) making it boring to watch. Aside from being predictable, I just don’t understand why the ‘The Regents’ (aliens) were battling humans where in fact, it was the humans who have sent the message first outside the Earth and for some reason, no one knew how ‘The Regents’ perceived that message which led them to attack our planet and in return, fighting back for no other reason except for survival.

About the castings, I’m okay with how they play each role. Among the major characters are Taylor Kitsch (known for the movie John Carter) as Lieutenant Alex Hopper, Brooklyn Decker as the leading lady Samantha Shane, Liam Neeson (The A-Team, Taken and Wrath of the Titans) as Admiral Shane, Alexander Skarsgård as Commander Stone Hopper and Rihanna as the Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes.

Lieutenant Alex Hopper and Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes

This is a debut movie for Rihanna as part of the major casts (we’ve already seen her in Bring It On: All or Nothing) and her acting is just acceptable. She maybe a Grammy Award winner but with Battleship, one can witness as well her acting prowess. While watching her in the movie, I think the Officer Raike’s character is more appropriate for someone who used to do action jam-packed scenes, like Michelle Rodriguez (Resident Evil part 1, Avatar).

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the effects that have been used in the film were similar to that of the Transformers (I even anticipated either for Optimus Prime or Megatron to appear – forgetting that it’s another movie). The sound effects were also pretty much synonymous especially when the aliens’ battleship was in motion. Let’s just accept it, the maker of this movie is the same company that brought us the Transformers.

I understand why the story is very simple and predictable because it is only based on the classic Hasbro naval combat game. But I would think that it would be more interesting if they injected a twist on how the alien ‘thing’ tries to invade the Earth. Since the producer already invested to its awesome effects, why not invest on the script itself. The visual arts can be elegant to the audience eyes, but it’s the content that matters most, making the movie memorable after all. (AAP)
