Engr. Melvin C. Acosta, the current National President of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) has openly shared his own managing experiences as a Professional Electronics Engineer at ABS-CBN, during the 1st seminar of IECEP Manila Chapter held at the Audio Visual Conference Room, Ozanam Building, Adamson University, San Marcelino, Manila, March 16.

This time the topic was unique unlike the usual technical seminar given by the IECEP Manila Chapter organization. It is about the concepts of Management in the actual corporate world of Electronics Engineering practice. Engr. Acosta was able to discuss the theory behind the effective management using series of Case Study. This kind of approach was somewhat effective to the participants because they were able to visualize the contextual idea of management with real-life examples. Moreover, the participants could apply the concepts directly to their respective jobs since they were able to comprehend each scenario synonymous to their working environment.

With the theme Management for Engineers – Real World Approach, the seminar was attended by a total of fifty Electronics Engineers from different companies. Among the attendees were from the Telecom, Semicon, and I.T. industries, including some who were from the academic institutions.

Meanwhile just before the lunch break, the IECEP Manila Chapter Officers headed by its current Governor, Engr. Ronnie O. Serfa Juan, together with the other officers: Engr. Jeriel B. Atal (Vice-Governor Internal), Engr. Ann E. Dulay (Vice-Governor External), Engr. Aleksandre A. Pates (Corporate Secretary), Engr. Armand C. Ursal (Finance Manager), Engr. Joycelyn P. Poblete (Auditor), Engr. Dennis L. Molina (Director-Technical), Engr. Rodrigo V. Carandang (Director-Finance Manager), Engr. Dennis N. Cabasal (Director-Membership) and Engr. Oliver R. Based on the feedbacks from the participants, this was the kind of seminar that they looked forward in attending to. Over-all, they have evaluated the activity as excellent when it comes to the speaker and the topic discussed including the logistics such as the amount and type of food served, the venue, the schedule, and the seminar fee which they said was just fair.

According to Engr. Acosta, he was glad to announce to the group that it was the first time for him to facilitate as the speaker in a seminar for a big group of 50 participants conducted by a local Chapter, IECEP Manila. (AAP)

Small but organized

A couple of weeks ago, I’ve watched a video clip about a Lego house. Actually, it was not really a house made of toy bricks or so but it was about someone’s apartment space where everything seems to be organized!

When I say organized, all parts of the house can be found in one room. Having a small space of 26 square meters, I was surprised because there’s still plenty of space available for the guests and the house owner.

The apartment has its own shower room, rest room, kitchen, dining room, living room, and bed room all-in-one place. How did the owner make it? Well, he’s quite smart because everything is movable or configurable!

Of course, the shower and rest rooms are in the same place but you’ll be amazed with his kitchen because sometimes it’s just a plain wall, then in a snap of a finger, it becomes a small cozy kitchen where you can make your delicious dishes. The one that I saw in the video is something like the kitchen cabinet organizers here. That makes my hungry now!

Meanwhile, just adjacent the kitchen is the living room and bedroom. However, it could be both living/bedroom depending on your interpretation since the queen bed can be sizable to its half which makes it a sofa and the Flat Panel Television set is mounted to a movable wall bracket! That’s awesome!

Opposite to it is where the dining area can be found using a wide-plank of wood thick wood coming down from the wall which is also movable and supported by another big chunk of wood to the ground. Cool!
I bet this type of apartment is fit only for bachelor or single lady use because how could you add the baby’s crib inside the room unless you’ll configure the apartment and you consider the crib and another bed as part of it. Quite a tactic, huh!? (AAP)

The Beat of My Life

Music is my life! Of all the talents that God has given me, singing and playing musical instruments are my favorites. I keep on telling my close friends that if I’m not an Engineer who is working as a full time Systems Analyst, I might be somewhere entertaining people with performances.

Well, I have no regret at all because I love my current profession and I can still perform in front of many people as a part time performer. Aside from being the band leader of TheUnspoken acoustic band, I’m also the male lead vocal and I play musical instruments at the same time. Neither a guitar nor a keyboard is the instrument that I’m playing but what I call the ‘C’ instruments: Caracas, Cajun (Beatbox Drum) and Chime, or better known as the percussion instruments. Sooner or later, I’ll be playing Bongo Drums for our Bossa Nova sets of songs.

In order for me to fulfill this role, I should sing and play the instrument at the same time. Based on experience, it’s really challenging for a performer to multi-task because you need to synchronize with the other members of the band and you need to move as one. Sometimes I even catch my breath to be just in synch with them.

We usually perform at the wedding and birthday receptions in different venues like hotels, resorts, and conferences. For me, the audience applause is the food to my soul. It satisfies me not just as a performer but more of a worthy person with one greatest purpose, and that is to entertain people! (AAP)

Are you soon to get married? Well, there are lots of things that an engaged couples should consider like the church, receptions, bridal car, etc. Commonly, a couple needs to allot at least 6 months to 2 years of preparation for the biggest event of their lifetime and sometimes, it takes 3 or more years of preparation depending of course on the situation.

Last March 9-10, I had the privilege to attend a special event for the soon-to-get married couples: the Wedding Expo Philippines which held at the Ground Floor, SMX Convention Center.

It was my first time to attend to this kind of exhibit and I was quite impressed with how the organizers have arranged the venue and their respective presentations. This was a great opportunity for the soon-to-wed couples because most of the exhibitors offer great discounts. Also, participants have the chance to win in every hour raffle draws wherein the prizes were related to the couple’s wedding celebration.

The event organizers have presented a wide variety of exhibitors (from the Bridal car, up to the wedding rings and bibles for the entourage, down to the wedding gowns, cakes, receptions, souvenirs, wines, and photo and video coverage). Also, they have some exhibitors who offer wedding performers in church and reception. However, I noticed there were only 2 of them. Thus, if you are looking for wedding performers and you want your theme songs or your preferred sets of songs to be performed on your wedding day, then you can contact TheUnspoken | acoustic band who has a vast experience in wedding, birthday and event performances. On the other hand, while I’m covering this event, I saw these two great good friends of mine: Niño and Mary Grace. They were my former officemates in my previous company and we had a really nice chitchat inside the SMX Convention.

If you missed the date, don’t worry, because you can still go to the Philippine Wedding Summit Year 8 on June 22-23, 2013 at the World Trade Center, Manila. If you’re not available on the said dates, they will have another Wedding Expo event on September 21-22, 2013 at the same venue, Ground Floor, SMX Convention Center. These three big events are brought to you by Themes & Motifs, the Philippines’ most prestigious, most professional, & most sought after organizer/producer of wedding fairs. (AAP)

Water for Life

Water is considered to be one of the ancient elements in Greek Philosophy. Hence for us human beings, it is part of the basic necessities of life. Without water, we will definitely die!

But do you know that aside from the life-giving factors of water, it is also used to encourage positive vibes in a place, home and to the persons. Well, water is used in Feng Shui to attract the positive energy to something. Literally, the term Feng Shui is translated in English as “wind-water”.

There are lots of beliefs about the use of water like the one I read from a book: if you are preparing for an examination and you want to attain that full concentration with the books that you are reading, all you have to do is put a glass of water on the table. I don’t know the actual reason behind that but one of the reasons I think is that, when you are concentrating with your studies, your brain actually consumes a bigger amount of water in your body and as a result, you might get thirsty that you want to drink a glass of it.

Maybe, that idea is more of a practical reason but I know for sure that there is a health and psychological benefits behind that. Who knows?

Have you noticed that there is something in common with most of the establishments as of today whether it’s a Mall, Coffee Shop, Restaurant and even Hotels? You’re right! Almost all of them have a water fountain in front. Take note, not just a stagnant water but a free flowing water. This is because; it’s a belief that the free flowing of water brings luck to the business operation of the establishment.

Hence, the belief in water fountain is not just applicable to the business but also to houses to bring forth a good luck to the people who are living in it. Might as well consider installing a water features for the garden fountains as it is not just about the quality but also of its unique-elegant style.

I know that there is no such thing as luck. Because I believe that it can only be attained when there is an opportunity that comes and you are prepared and really worked hard for it, now that’s what I call believable luck! Moreover, Feng Shui and other beliefs are only there to serve as our guide to pursue those paths. (AAP)

My Precious Aurum

Time is gold… As a very busy person, I really consider my time as a precious gold because I only use it productively and as much as possible, meaningful. Like the college gold ring that I used to have ten years ago.

I used to wear that ring during special occasion. Unfortunately, the memories of that gold ring have vanished when I lost it or should I say someone stole it from my baggage when I went to Malaysia two years ago.

It is true that gold symbolizes wealth not just during the renaissance period but until now. For others, they are considering gold as a special jewelry that should be worn out on balls, celebrations, and classy gatherings which should really be the case.

I believe that the striking shiny color of gold attracts lucky charms bringing graces and blessings to the one who owns it. Moreover, I bet the one who holds something like the especially designed Golden Eagle Coin can confidently say that he or she has one of the most precious things on earth.

If you think that Gollum has the most precious jewelry based on the film The Lord of the Rings, you are definitely wrong because as of today, there are lots of Jewelry stores that could offer the same unique quality and design but of course not the same powers behind that exquisite ring. (AAP)

A True Project for a Good Cause

They say that we should learn from the oldies and we should teach the kiddies! So I keep on reminding myself that when I grow old, I will try my best to never commit the same mistakes I have learned from the elders. Hence to start that pretty much self-advocacy of mine; let me share with you a portion of my insight which is actually one of my experiences during the school days.

It is common for a teacher or professor to impose a school project related to a subject inside a classroom of whatever levels whether it’s in elementary, highschool or tertiary. But one thing I notice is that, the projects that they are actually imposing to the students is not that substantially helpful or practical in a sense that one might even forget it after a few months or so. Well, I excuse my statement for those who are in the Basic Education because the implied statement is for those who are in tertiary and college levels, Project Thesis should I say.

First things first! Of course, understandably, the project should be related to your respective courses or majors. One cannot submit a project or thesis about the ‘most delicious recipe’ if you are taking a technical course like Engineering or Architecture, moreover if you are a Medical Doctor student: no you shouldn’t do that! What I’m just saying is that, the project should be related to the respective course discipline, at the same time, it should be practical in a sense that it is useful to our life. I mean, that’s one of the reasons why we study right: to discover new things and use it to improve our daily lives ethically?

I can still remember the time when I was in college. My course is related to Electronics and Communications Engineering Technology. We have a subject that is called Signals and Antenna. Part of the curriculum is to study how the waves are propagating and transmitted from one medium to the other. As a final project, we need to create a TV Antenna that could actually capture signals which can be useful to our respective TV sets at home. Individually, we created our own Antenna designs depending on how many channels that we would like to capture. Our grades were dependent on how accurate our Antenna with our designs. We make used of different sizes of Aluminum Steels and connectors thus in order to attain the desired length of the materials, we conducted the process called Tube Bending.

With all those computations and analysis, we were able to finish our Antenna. Actually, it’s quite an experience because the said project was useful to us as it brought clear signals to our TV set.

Academe life just happens once in a lifetime so make the most out of it. Enjoy it as much as you can. Perhaps, we can make it pleasurable and productive enough at the same time! Take note that we go to school not just only to learn the lessons from the book or from our teachers but we are there to learn the lessons of life in general! (AAP)
