When Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) was discovered in 1984, it changed the way how people should make an all-the-way relationship from strangers. Well, if it’s just for friendship where you want someone you can talk to, then that’s fine, but if you’re looking for someone to have an intimate something, then you must take extra precautionary measures as you might get one accidentally.

In this year’s Pilot Project on Theatre for Development for HIV Prevention Education, the Tanghalang Pilipino Inc. (TP), a resident theatre company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in partnership with UNICEF joined force through a worthy One-Act Stage Play project entitled Melanie. This project will utilize theatre as an instrument of behavioral change and self-reflection, exploring a non-threatening form of education, raising awareness and enabling positive change amongst young people.

The casts and crew together with Mr. Nanding Josef.

Ms. Layeta Bucoy wrote this one-act play with music by master pianist Mr. Jed Balsamo under the artistic direction of TP’s Associate Director, Mr. Tuxqs Rutaquio. The play is about the death of Melanie as it becomes the subject of controversy by the townsfolk. It creatively begins with a funeral turned disco party. Melanie’s death alarms the community especially those who live there exchanging sexual partners. Each of the characters discusses the horrors of what Melanie has experienced. As the story goes by, we could not only witness the character’s fear of infection but also fears stemming from ignorance and myths. Moreover, we could see their fears of becoming an HIV victim and the rejection of the society.

I’m with the playwright (Ms. Layeta Bucoy) and the director (Mr. Tuxqs Rutaquio).

But why HIV/AIDS Awareness and why should we seriously take the alarming condition of such topic for the youth? Based on recent facts, the results are quite disturbing. In April 2013, as reflected in the April 2013 HIV and AIDS Registry of the National Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health (DOH), a total of 388 new HIV cases for the said month alone was reported to the DOH, adding up to 13,179 total cases since 1984. Out of the total 388 new cases reported, 119 cases are among young people ages 15-24. However, these are just reported cases which do not include the other infected people who do not undergone HIV testing.

While covering this event, I was glad to meet ate Precious Cundangan (Former Editor-In-Chief of Change Newsletter Magazine of FAD, Inc.)

With this project, TP and UNICEF hope to bring Melanie to community audience not only in Metro Manila but on the other parts of the country. The performance of the play –a theatre forum piece –  will culminate ia a dialogue with and amongst the audience of stakeholders in the community.

You cannot actually tell if someone has HIV/AIDS by looking only on their physical appearance. No one truly knows unless he or she is tested positively, but there’s one thing that’s for sure, we have helpful information to prevent someone from getting the virus, and we’re lucky enough that this project is born.

We all look forward on the schedule of the shows in the coming months. I’ll keep you guys posted! (AAP)

Virtual Security

Prevention is better than cure. We always regard this factual statement a living proof in taking care of our physical body, to prevent it from the harmful sickness as it affects not just our daily routines but also, the medication is quite expensive.

Like our body, our notebooks or workstation needs protection as well, not against to sickness but to the millions of viruses available over the internet. Everyday, there are many new viruses created that could penetrate the computer system which will in effect disrupts our computer activity. Furthermore, it might affect our cost of living if the purpose of the computer is specifically for our job.

The best way to avoid these unwanted circumstances is to protect your notebooks and laptops by installing a specially-designed softwares that will guard your computer system against virus, spywares or malware. For instance, installing an Avira Antivirus can filter out any websites from phishing important personal data from your computer system. Of course, you don’t want to be victimized by those hackers and identity thieves, do you?

In this virtual age where everything is possible, well, it is much better to be safe than sorry! Investing on something worthy is as good as saving your time and money efficiently! (AAP)

TheUnspoken | acoustic band to perform live at Diamond Hotel Manila

Yes, you heard it right! The acoustic band, TheUnspoken which composed of André, Niña May, Leks and Jake will be performing live at Diamond Hotel Manila on October 19 during the wedding reception of Mr. Aidrian Baguio and Ms. Andy Dumalay.

Despite the band members’ busy schedule on their full time jobs in IT industry, they are able to cope with their passion by pursuing their career in the music industry. As a matter of fact, they continue in accepting gigs from wedding to birthdays and events. Hence, they still hesitate in performing in a regular venue due to the conflict in schedules.

Apparently, they are now rehearsing for the new sets of songs to be performed at this great venue (Diamond Hotel). The band members’ allotted almost their entire weekend of September for the preparation. The guitarists Leks and Jake plan in purchasing new guitars for their performance like the branded best cort bass guitars at guitar center. However, they said they prefer in using their existing guitars since they are used to it during rehearsals.

This October, they will polish their sets to give another soulful and awe-inspiring performance on this special day of Aidrian and Andy. Truly, the band members are IT professionals in nature but sincerely, they are professional musicians as well!

For bookings on Wedding and Event invitation, and/or additional information, you may contact André at 09178930204. Or you can email him at aleksphates@aol.com. (AAP)

Mind Over Body

Have you heard anything about the book that says it takes twenty one days to break or create someone’s habit? Yes, you heard it right! It normally takes 21 days of doing the same thing constantly without any disruption. This concept is helpful especially when you want to become productive or to start focusing on something that you want to accomplish.

For instance, you want to save money for something worth it like repairing the roofs of your house or painting it with a different color before the year ends, well at this very moment, start cutting back your unnecessary expenses like spending too much on fancy gadgets or eating in overrated expensive restaurants that serves fast but unhealthy foods.

But what if we reverse the process and simplifying it with this: you want to look healthy. Of course in order to do that, you will be forced to eat healthy yet thrifty foods (thrifty because healthy foods are usually cheap and inexpensive). Aside from that, eating healthy foods alone won’t make you healthy without having a fit lifestyle: habitual exercise will do. But wait, these two factors are not sufficient, like what I’ve said we need to do it consistently for 21 days to make it a habit.

When I was in my previous company, I used to go to the gym and workout for one to two hours before the start of my day shift. This became my daily routine because during that time, I was aiming to lose certain number of pounds. No offense for the fat people (whom I used to be one). It was not that a horrible experience but maybe somehow, an unpleasant one since there was a time I can’t use my pants and shirts because it didn’t fit to me anymore. Moreover, I was not comfortable especially during summer season because the humid weather wanted me to sweat more.

After three or four months of constantly working out in the gym, all my sacrifices have paved away when I lose 13-14 pounds. There was no secret in losing weight fast because aside from the work out I also ate healthy foods, I can still remember eating only wheat breads and tuna during lunch time and I refrained from going to the fast food chains. What I noticed during that time was that, aside in losing certain number of pounds, I saved my supposed to be allowance which let me invested our 16 cubic feet inverter refrigerator that costs about P40,000.00 (approximately $952.00).

The bottom line is, I achieved my target weight and I’m pretty much sure I gained quite an impressive health. Furthermore, I was able to save my money and spent it on something worth it. It’s like hitting three birds with one stone.

What we think is what we really want to comprehend even if our body prevents us in doing so. Like for instance in a cold weekend morning, we rather stick on our bed and sometimes oversleep instead of doing some exercise and work out. However, we can contradict this situation by our way of thinking, that there’s no secret in reaching a certain goal because we only have to believe that it lies in every sacrifice. (AAP)

Romanticize Your Vacation in Paris

Romantic Paris, Vacation in Paris, Paris, Victor Hugo, Alexander Dumas, Les Misérables, The Hunchback of Noter Dame, The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo

For couples, you can either express your romance in words or in action. But why would you limit the expression of your love within these two words, when you could bring your partner in the romantic place itself. When I say romantic, it’s not the usual place where the lovers go on Heart’s Day but it’s the place like Paris where you could feel the concealment of the nature that would somehow make each moments memorable.

Aside from the famous Eiffel Tower, Paris is also rich in culture and literary. Among the countless books and novels that have been set in Paris as a location are Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables, and Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.

If you opt to visit Paris, of course you want to ensure that you and your companion will have a vacation of a lifetime. However, you also want to consider your budget. Instead of staying in a prestigious hotel, you might want to find paris luxury apartment rentals to have a unique experience.

For me, taking a vacation in Paris is quite a noble experience that could happen in my life because unlike my usual out-of-town trips where I stayed in hotels, residing in a luxury apartment rentals in Paris is just sufficient as it could take you closer to the medieval facade of the city.

There is a saying that as long as you are young and you have the opportunity to travel, you need to take it. Otherwise, you’ll just end up imagining that experience rather than living the dream. Earth is such a beautiful gift from God and I know He likes us to see and appreciate that gift, to show how much He really loves us! (AAP)

“To Master Everything is to Experience Something…” (my 1st Closing Remarks to my fellow Engineers)

Last August 17 / Saturday, since I’m the Corporate Secretary of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines Manila Chapter, I was assigned to prepare a closing remarks to the participants of the 4th and 5th Seminars of IECEP Manila Chapter. This is the Taglish (combination of Tagalog and English) speech that I have shared and have dedicated to my fellow Electronics Engineers:

***

Likas sa mga Pilipino ang maging Jack of all trades. May kasabihan nga tayo na to master everything is to master nothing. Pansin n’yo ba gan’un din ang ECE, in the academe we have been studying partial of different specializations from various engineering discipline: like Thermodynamics of the Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Circuits of the Electrical Engineers, Strength of Materials of the Civil Engineers.

Pero any equipments or device running in low-power, well-defined na sa practice natin ‘yun.

This is the best time for us to look at this great opportunity of our profession.

You may be wondering why am I wearing Accenture shirt. I am not working in Accenture but I used to work there. Hindi sa call center nila ha kasi kapag sinabing accenture, ang stereotype ay call center agad. Also not even as network administrator ha, sa I.T. po ako nag-work d’un, Solutions Workforce. Pero before accenture, nagwork din naman ako sa call center sa Convergys as Tech Support when I was reviewing for board exam.

Ngayong mga professionals na tayo and we are in our respective industries, let’s not believe in the saying na, to master everything is to master nothing! Let’s change it this way: To master everything is to experience something. Siyempre mga former ECE students nga tayo ‘di ba? And that’s how we were trained in the academe. Let’s use that experience to hone our skills in our choice of specialization as ECT, ECE or PECE.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for attending this seminar. Like what Engr. Melvin Acosta told us this morning, let’s use this event not just for the purpose of earning CPE points to renew our licenses but also let’s consider this as an avenue to augment our knowledge and develop our technical skills.

Once again, thank you and see on the next seminars of IECEP Manila Chapter. This is Engr. Aleksandre Pates, proud to be an Electronics Engineer! (AAP)
