Practice with all your Ear

A stylish home studio… This is what I’ve been dreaming of in the next 6 or 7 years of my life. It is perhaps one of the tangible goals that I must reach no matter what happen.

Singing is my first love of my life. I started singing in front of the people when I was five years old. My audience during that time was usually my relatives and neighbors. Sometimes, they gave me a peso coin as a reward. My love for singing was influenced by my aunties who were used to be musically inclined persons. They love to join singing contests to showcase their talents to others and after a while, they ended up as band singers/performers, travelling in different parts of the world. I admire them for their passion in music and how they persuade me with singing as well.

When I was still studying, the school organizers always approach us (me and my sister) to give an intermission number in a school program whether it’s a pageant, academic or sometimes even competition with other schools.

As a preparation, we almost always rehearsed extensively every after school hours. There were also times that we were excused with our respective classes so that we could practice our performance.

In our home, if I would like to practice my singing but yet I don’t want to disturb someone especially the babies who are sleeping, I put on the headset so that I am the only one who can hear the music and my voice. This experience has helped me a lot because I could barely hear the sound and evaluate my performance correctly.

Nowadays, even if you’re playing heavy musical instruments like electric guitar, you can now practice without disturbing others since there are rockman amps available in the market that you can perfectly use.

I can still remember the words I heard from someone who is also in the music industry that everyone has the capability of singing in tune, it just so happen that there are some who is out-of-tune because of deafness which makes it hard for him or her to adjust to the correct pitch. (AAP)

The Extraordinary Tokens

Every person has his or her own belief whether it’s superstitious or traditional. Like in the case of some family who builds a home from scratch, they implant handful number of coins in the making of their cemented staircase. It is believed that in this way, it will bring resources and bountiful blessings to each members of the family. A mere superstition that is sometimes close to reality. Anyway, there’s no harm in trying!

But why coins and not paper money with higher denominations? Well I think it’s because paper money is made of papers while coins are made from different kinds of metal. In the early century, there are coins which are made of real gold and pure silver. Maybe that’s why it symbolizes prosperity and triumphant.

We also use coins as a reward in our office everytime we’ll conduct people engagement activities. Not the real coins but only the toy coins. We distribute varying numbers of it to the participants of the game. Of course, the winner gets the higher number of coins. The employees need to collect and keep these coins because at the end of the year, the company will provide branded merchandises wherein the employee can redeem that using the coins they’ve earned!

In that activity, we only use plastic toy coins since we’re considering our budget to fit with every expense. Hence, if we have handful of budget, then we might as well consider buying and using especially designed coins with company logo. This idea is possible now since I saw these army challenge coins that are made fantastically.

These may not be the real coins that you can use in the market but they are indeed worth keeping especially when these coins are given to you as an honor of something you did valuable.

Coins maybe just a piece of metal to someone but it could signify a thousand respect to a person. Now we know why the Leprechauns are very mad if someone took his shilling. (AAP)

Visita Iglesia 2013: My Personal Pledge

At long last I found a perfect time to write this what I call introspective write-up… It may sound anew to you since I’m voicing out my meditative inner emotions in this rainy season! Well, maybe our gloomy weather tells me to write about something that would accidentally strike again our own personal guilt! Let me share with you another experience which happened during Lenten Season sometime last week of March this year.

Annually, it was my personal pledge to participate in the Lenten activity entitled Visita Iglesia. This is being conducted every Maundy Thursday or Good Friday before the proclamation of the 7 – Last Words. If you can still remember, I wrote a pretty much the same article last year about my Visita Iglesia 2012. Of course, this time I visited again 7 different churches around Metro Manila.

Thanked God that during this year’s visita, I’ve had sufficient amount of strength and energy to finish this soul-mesmerizing activity after my night shift job. Here is the chronological order of the churches that I’ve visited:

Saint Paul the Apostle Parish, #3 Scout Rallos corner Timog Avenue, Mother Ignacia & Scout Santiago Street Barangay Laging Handa, Quezon City, Saint Paul the Apostle Parish Church Philippines, St. Jude Thaddeus Quasi Parish, St. Jude Thaddeus Quasi Parish Philippines, Heart’s of Jesus and Mary Parish, Heart’s of Jesus and Mary Parish Philippines, Sto. Domingo Church, Sto. Domingo Church Philippines, Holy Family Parish, Holy Family Parish Philippines, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Philippine, Our Lady of Victories Church, Our Lady of Victories Church Philippines, Latin Church in the Philippines, Latin Church, Philippine Churches, Visita Iglesia

Saint Paul the Apostle Parish, #3 Scout Rallos corner Timog Avenue, Mother Ignacia & Scout Santiago Street Barangay Laging Handa, Quezon City, Saint Paul the Apostle Parish Church Philippines, St. Jude Thaddeus Quasi Parish, St. Jude Thaddeus Quasi Parish Philippines, Heart’s of Jesus and Mary Parish, Heart’s of Jesus and Mary Parish Philippines, Sto. Domingo Church, Sto. Domingo Church Philippines, Holy Family Parish, Holy Family Parish Philippines, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Philippine, Our Lady of Victories Church, Our Lady of Victories Church Philippines, Latin Church in the Philippines, Latin Church, Philippine Churches, Visita Iglesia

1. Saint Paul the Apostle Parish. The name of the church may sound familiar to you if you’re living nearby the Tomas Morato Street or West Avenue of Quezon City. This church is located at #3 Scout Rallos corner Timog Avenue, Mother Ignacia & Scout Santiago Street Barangay Laging Handa, Quezon City.

How did I get there? Well since every year, our LRT and MRT trains are having their maintenance during Lenten season, I rode a bus from EDSA Magallanes to Quezon Avenue. I crossed the other side of the highway using the overpass and from there I walked along Mother Ignacia Street until I reached Timog Avenue. It’s a very long-walk, about 15 to 20 minutes.

2. St. Jude Thaddeus Quasi Parish was the second church that I visited. It is a 10-minute walk across Delta going to West Avenue.

It is located inside a subdivision at Zamboanga Street, Quezon City. This parish looks less than a decade old. It’s small but I could say it’s definitely a solemn place.

3. The third church that I visited was another one from Quezon City; it is the Heart’s of Jesus and Mary Parish. This church is also located inside a private subdivision at Daily Mirror Street, West Triangle, Quezon City.

This was another 15-minute walk from the second church but if you have a car, you can just drive to get there. If you’ll be coming from EDSA, just drive along the Quezon Avenue going to Quiapo lane then just before reaching Delta (West Avenue), you can see a McDonald’s establishment; just turn right and there is signage that would lead you to the said church.

This church is quite big and stylish. One thing that I noticed, it has a gymnasium beside it so during the time that I pray, the people at the gymnasium were very noisy as it disturbed the church’s visitors.

4. The next church that I visited was one of the biggest and famous churches in Metro Manila, the Sto. Domingo Church. From the previous church, I walked certain kilometers to reach the highway ignoring the scorching heat of the sun. After that, I took a jeepney ride to get there since the location of the church is quite far from Heart’s of Jesus and Mary Parish.

As usual, this church has lots of visitors and you could actually feel the melodramatic presence of the Lenten Season. Don’t be surprised if you see around people with illnesses. Also, don’t be too sensitive or irritated because they are the same people with faith like ours and asking for the mercy of our Lord God above.

5. I was almost halfway when I visited the Holy Family Parish. It is located inside a subdivision at Madre Silva corner Lilac Street, Roxas District, Quezon City. From Sto. Domingo Church, it was another jeepney ride along Quezon Avenue. From the highway, I walked another few kilometers to reach the church.

How was I able to navigate the exact location of this rare address? With the help of my iPad’s GPS. The map might not detect the actual location of the church but it helped me trace the name of the streets. Quite an adventure, huh!?

7. It was an honor for me that Our Lady of Victories Church was the last of the seven churches that I visited. Not just because it was the last but also because of the uniqueness of this church. It is located at #2 Cannon Road corner Valley Road, New Manila, Quezon City.

What’s so rare about this church is that, the Tridentine Mass is celebrated exclusively in Latin. I can still remember the time when I went there. The presiding priest was a foreigner and they were having the Parish Recollection activity.

If you’re thinking that I’ve only had church hopping, which means that after I reached one church I immediately went to the other, you’re definitely wrong! Of course, I still observed the conduct of the Stations of the Cross per church visit.

When you say personal pledge, it means personal sacrifice as well. It doesn’t mean that you have to stab yourself with wounds or nail yourself at the cross to take the word sacrifice literally, but it really depends on how truthful you are with yourself and with your faith.

You can tell me that this article is not relevant with time because you might say, “what the hell? It’s August and we’re about to celebrate the Mooncake festival or just the right time to prepare for the coming of the ‘ber’ months.”

For me, there’s no perfect time to reflect because our Lord God above is not also choosing for a perfect time in showering us with blessings or to always help us in times of trouble! (AAP)

Rock-A-Bye TV

It is common for most people to listen in soft music to make them sleepy before bed time while reading their favorite book; a radio or instrumental background music will do! However, some people use television as a substitute not just during bed time but even in siesta. I’ll give my father as an example.

We have a 32” Flat Screen television in our living room. It’s not mounted on the wall but it’s placed on top of a tv rack. Every afternoon, after watching his favorite sports program in Basketball TV or Solar Sports channel, he will switch it to a cable news channel, and since this is siesta time, he always ends up sleeping on the sofa while holding the remote control and leaving the television set turned on.

Watching television is a good leisure to enjoy great TV series despite the existence of YouTube. Also it is a great source of essential news information whether locally or abroad. Moreover, it is now known as a perfect substitute in preparing for a good deep sleep! (AAP)

Breathe Your Stress Away

Opportunity knocks only once in a person’s life so as much as possible, I always grab whatever opportunity that comes to me. Thus as a consequence, my body sometimes gets carried away wherein I end up feeling tired and stressed.

To counter this effect, I usually take a vacation and go to a place where I can breathe fresh air and relax. It does not only help me to clear my minds up but it also helps me to reflect on the things that I need to prioritize. Well, breathing fresh clean air has benefits in a person not just physically but also mentally.

What if you don’t have that sufficient vacation leaves because you just transfer to a different company? That’s a problem! Not a huge thing but an essential one to contemplate. Don’t worry, because you don’t need to go out-of-town just to escape the polluted environment of the Metro and breathe in fresh air by just using a portable hepa air purifier. With this device, you can now inhale that fresh clean air inside your office while sipping a cup of coffee, or at home while watching your favorite show.

So if you are a busy person full of passion and you want to maximize your productive life, might as well consider installing this helpful device as it would not only prevent you from the expensive vacation trip but it could also take the full advantage of clean fresh air. (AAP)

The Acoustic Adele Medley of TheUnspoken

When Adele shook the Music Industry in 2011, our acoustic band, TheUnspoken has made our own rendition of her songs. She has plenty of trademark songs which are all original and unique that’s why among these, we’ve picked out five of our favorite songs to be part of our medley: Someone Like You, Chasing Pavements, Don’t You Remember, Make You Feel My Love, and Rolling In The Deep (that served as our intro and finale song at the same time).

If you closely listen to Adele’s recorded album, you can imagine a big full band with lots of musical instruments playing at the background, or sometimes even orchestra. Hence this became a challenge to our band since we’re performing acoustically wherein there was neither keyboard nor electric guitar, and instead only two acoustic guitars and the vocalists. Take note, I haven’t played any percussion instruments yet during that time unlike today wherein I played beatbox (Cajun), Chime, and Maracas, and in the future, I might be playing some upgraded instruments like Bongo or electronic drum set at guitar center.

Well, our band’s acoustic version of Adele Medley was applauded by the audience during that time, and there were even others saying that they have had LSS (last song syndrome) because of it.

Since then, we include our very own rendition of Adele Medley to the other events that we attend to. You can watch the past performances of the band by clicking the links below:
